Frequently asked questions
What is the Swedish dental licensing exam (kunskapsprov)?
The kunskapsprov is a two-part exam administered by Karolinska Institutet on behalf of Socialstyrelsen. It consists of a theoretical test (6 hours, computer-based) and a practical test (eight stations across two days). Its purpose is to verify that you have the knowledge required for a Swedish dental license.
How long does the kunskapsprov take?
The theoretical exam runs for 6 hours of writing time plus breaks. The practical exam spans two days with a total of eight stations. The entire kunskapsprov must be completed within 5 years of your first theoretical attempt.
Which subjects are covered in the theoretical kunskapsprov?
The exam covers all dental subject areas, including cariology, periodontology, oral surgery, prosthodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, oral medicine, pediatric dentistry, radiology, occlusal physiology, dental pharmacology, oral pathology, gerodontology, oral health, and dental materials. Related areas like pharmacology and anatomy are also tested.
How many attempts are allowed on the kunskapsprov?
You get a maximum of 5 attempts at the theoretical exam and 3 attempts at the practical exam. The entire kunskapsprov must be completed within 5 years of your first theoretical attempt.
What are the language requirements for a Swedish dental license?
You need Swedish at C1 level according to the Common European Framework. Svenska 3 or Svenska som andraspråk 3 from Komvux also qualifies. Equivalent proficiency in Norwegian or Danish is accepted by Socialstyrelsen.
When can I register for the kunskapsprov?
Registration for the theoretical exam typically opens several months in advance and closes about 5 weeks before the exam date. You need an eligibility decision from Socialstyrelsen before you can register. First-time candidates are prioritized when seats are limited (around 100 per sitting).
What's the difference between the kunskapsprov and the complementary dental program?
The kunskapsprov is an exam you pass on your own after self-study. The complementary program (KUT) is a 1-year university program offered at Karolinska Institutet, Göteborg University, and Malmö University. Both lead to the same license, but competition for KUT seats is strong.
What happens after passing the kunskapsprov?
After passing, you need to complete a course in Swedish healthcare law and regulations (författningskurs, delivered online) and six months of supervised clinical practice (praktisk tjänstgöring). You can then apply for your license from Socialstyrelsen.
How should I prepare for the theoretical kunskapsprov?
Start at least 6 months in advance, work through KI's literature list, and practice systematically with previous exam questions. Simulate exam conditions with timed tests before the real thing. Diso is built for this, with exam-format questions, detailed explanations, and progress tracking by subject.
Can I take the kunskapsprov without living in Sweden?
The theoretical exam is held on-site in Sweden (typically Stockholm) and requires a Swedish personal or coordination number (personnummer or samordningsnummer). The practical exam also requires physical attendance. Many candidates prepare abroad and travel to Sweden only for the exams themselves.
Are the questions on Diso based on real licensing exams?
Yes, our questions are based on previous years' dental licensing exams and follow the same format as KI's test. Each question has detailed explanations that help you understand both the correct answer and why the alternatives are wrong.
How long does it take to go through all the material?
It depends on how much time you put in. Most users go through all the material in about 6 months, at 10 to 15 hours of study per week.
Can I use the platform on my phone?
Yes, the platform works on both mobile and desktop. You can practice questions and take simulated exams wherever you are.
